Founders work took a generation
Our founders are so often invoked and with good reason. Their design has carried through over two centuries of success, enduring a Civil War and many other tests. It’ worth recalling that the Constitution was the culmination of 25 years of debate and struggle.
The patriotic English colonists helped Britain win the French and Indian War, then the conflict with Parliament over the 1765 Stamp Act, the Declaratory Acts, the increasing tension that sparked the 1770 Boston Massacre, the 1773 Boston Tea Party – Britain closed Boston Harbor, the creation of the colonists Committees of Correspondence, the long internal debate about independence, the outbreak of fighting at Lexington and Concord in 1775, the Declaration of Independence - a treasonous act against the crown, Valley Forge, Saratoga, the French Alliance, 1781 victory at Yorktown, peace with Britain in 1783.
From May to September Philadelphia Constitutional Convention followed by 9 months of debate from which came the Federalist Papers. An entire generation devoted to creating a nation.
John Adams was thirty when the Stamp Act passed and 52 when the Constitution was signed by 39 Convention delegates. Let's honor their work by preserving the Constitutional system we enjoy
